Forbes has a helpful piece on the recent breakthrough in deriving embryonic-like pluripotent stem cells from ordinary skin cells, thus removing the ethical controversies of destroying human embryos or endangering women through egg donation.  The process produces what are called induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC).
