During yesterday's House Judiciary Committee hearing, a former Dept. of Justice employee named Monica Goodling was giving testimony in the fired U.S. attorneys kerfuffle. What is significant for Christians and defenders of the First Amendment is how Rep. Stephen Cohen turned the hearing into an inquisition on the nature of Regent University, a Christian university and Monica Goodling's alma mater. You can view video of the questioning (skip to the 2:45 mark for the exchange) or read the transcript (excerpts below or look for Rep. Cohen's name half-way through the link).

Later in the hearing representatives Forbes and King discussed the successes of Regent and the Christian foundings of both Harvard and Yale. See the excerpts below.

UPDATE: Byron York at National Review Online has a summary of the hearing with Cohen's comments highlighted.

TRANSCRIPT EXCERPTS

REP. STEPHEN I. COHEN, D-TENN.:Thank you, Mr. Chairman.

Ms. Goodling, I've read your vitae and it says that you grew up and you mostly went -- you went to public schools. Is that K through 12?

GOODLING:Yes.

COHEN:And it says you went to Christian universities in part because of the value they placed on service.

What was the other part, that you chose Christian universities?

It appears that some national and state pro-life leaders didn't share Dr. James Dobson's pleasure with the recent Supreme Court ruling upholding the Partial Birth Abortion Ban. In fact they took out a full-page ad in Colorado Springs' The Gazette calling for him to "repent" for his statements claiming the ban will protect children.

Hmmm...

Wendy Kaminer takes an insightful look at what kinds of "free speech" the ACLU will and will not defend. The same organization that defended the rights of neo-Nazis in Skokie, IL will not defend a young man with a religious opposition to homosexuality.

The recent Supreme Court decision upholding the partial-birth abortion ban has raised some eyebrows for what some of the justices cited in the majority opinion. For over a decade conservatives have been passing legislation that "chips away" at Roe on both the federal and state level by noting how abortion affects... women, and the New York Times is paying attention! Read their analysis.

Parents who utilize IVF (in vitro fertilization) must make a difficult decision if they choose to implant multiple fertilized embryos- which developing baby (or babies) do they keep and which do they abort? This Washington Post article from Sunday explores the ethical dilemmas and reactions of both parents and healthcare professionals.

Should stillborn babies be given only death certificates? In many states that is all they receive. Yet pro-abortion activists fear issuing birth certificates for stillbirths because pro-lifers might "hijack" the language and argue for the personhood of the "fetus." Kinda makes you scratch your head. Seven states are currently debating the issue in their legislatures.

Since the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court opened the door for homosexual marriage in 2004, one of the chief concerns has been out-of-state gay couples going to Massachusetts to be married if their home state does not issue marriage licenses to homosexual couples. Well it turns out that the concern was valid since New Yorkers who went to Massachusetts before a New York court ruled against gay marriage have had their marriages validated by a Massachusetts judge.

University of Pennsylvania researchers have used adult stem cells in mice to regrow hair on mice who have suffered deep skin wounds. In fact, these scientists believe they will able to treat male human baldness as a result of their research, perhaps in five years!

This research only emphasizes the variety and effectiveness of adult stem cell therapies which do not have the moral problems associated with embryonic stem cell research.

Pro-Lifers often have polls thrown in their faces that suggest that most of the American public opposes overturning Roe v. Wade.  As recent poll results show that could be because of how misinformed the public really is about what the famous Supreme Court decision actually does.  LifeNews.com reports on the poll results here.

The poll was sponsored by and the Ethics and Public Policy Center and the Judicial Confirmation Network who both produced informative memos that fully explain the poll results (read them here, here, and here).

In 1987 an article was published in a gay publication that outlined a comprehensive strategy for legitimizing and then promoting homosexuality throughout our society.  Looking back over 20 years shows just how faithfully its advice was heeded and applied.  "The Overhauling of Straight America" (PDF file) should be read carefully by concerned citizens.

Though conservatives are often accused of seeking to "force their morality on others," in reality we merely oppose having a secular and unbiblical morality forced on us.  Christians should speak the truth in love to homosexuals and liberal activists, but that does not mean we should appologize for not wanting the homosexual agenda forced upon us and our children.

In order to conduct human cloning and some forms of stem cell research, large quantities of human eggs must be "harvested" from donor women (often poor young women strapped for cash).  Though often ignored or downplayed, egg harvesting poses serious health risks to women and raises serious ethical questions.  This New York Times article helps shed some light on the ethical problems.

Conservatives have long been skeptical of "reform" proposals and some of the recent "lobby reform" proposals certainly merit such skepticism.  This Heritage Foundation report mentions one such proposal which would limit the free speech rights of American citizens and dangerously isolate the administration from public opinion.
