It seems that Congress is poised to send a deal to the president for approval that would increase the debt ceiling by the largest amount in American history.  It seems the measure has enough support from House Republicans to pass.  Vice President Joe Biden likening the Tea Party to terrorists was only a sample of the liberal outrage expressed over the deal.  Yuval Levin explains some of the details of the deal.

Fiscal conservatives seem divided over whether the deal is the “best that could be done” or a sellout that solves nothing.  One thing to be grateful for is that taxes were not raised on America's families.

Congress is expected to approve the deal tonight.

UPDATE (8/2):  The House passed the debt ceiling deal last night by a vote of 269 - 161.  Now it goes to the Senate.  Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell says the compromise measure is a "good first step."

The House just passed a plan by Speaker Boehner (R-OH) that increases the debt ceiling by about $1 Trillion and claims to cut spending by the same amount.  A vote on a Balanced Budget Amendment to the Constitution was added to the plan to get recalcitrant Republicans on board.

Fiscal conservatives still seem divided over whether passing the Boehner plan was the best that could be done with a Democrat controlled Senate and White House or a betrayal of Tea Party, limited government principles.

Now the Senate must decide if it will give the measure a fair up-or-down vote.  Senate Democrats have threatened to block the bill.  While President Obama and Democrat leaders have been demanding “compromise,” Republican Leader Sen. McConnell says Democrats have no plan.

On Friday Speaker Boehner (R-OH) walked away from debt ceiling talks with President Obama, alleging that the president was “moving the goal posts.”  Now, the House and Senate have released dueling plans (both of which do not include tax increases), while the president has asked for TV air time tonight at 9:00pm EST to make a speech on the issue.

Meanwhile, polls show that most Americans are afraid that the debt ceiling deal will raise taxes too much and not cut spending enough.  One commentator believes that President Obama is being less than truthful.
