In the summer of 2006 Congress debated a proposed constitutional amendment, entitled the Marriage Protection Amendment, which would have declared that legal marriage in the United States is solely between one man and one woman. This is a critical issue and will require the continuing support of informed and active citizens.

Advance USA believes that marriage is the fundamental building block of civilization. It is an institution not only ordained by God but should also be protected by government. It is crucial for our nation that the definition of marriage not be altered from the traditional one of "one man, one woman." Recent Action:
In the summer of 2006 the Senate failed to give the Marriage Protection Amendment an up-or-down vote and the House narrowly failed to reach the two-thirds margin necessary for passing a proposed Constitutional Amendment. Supporters of marriage should not lose heart, however, because gains have been made in the Senate and House since the last vote on the Federal Marriage Amendment in 2004. Constitutional Amendments often take decades of hard work and determination to become law. Some experts predict that the Marriage Protection Amendment will one day be ratified, as long as we continue to educate and advocate on behalf of the sacred and essential institution of marriage.
